The Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali of Rome and Universidad Europea de Valencia will be undertaking the 6th season of the bioarcheology research project of Via Ostiense Necropolis at Rome. The field school offers a practical training program in both funerary archaeology and physical anthropological study of roman cremations.

The research project is directed by Dr Marina Marcelli (Sovrintendenza Capitolina of Rome, responsible of archaeological area Sepolcreto della via Ostiense) and Llorenç Alapont Martín, Professor, International Master in Physical Anthropology and Archaeology of death (UEV), Researcher Departament de prehistòria i arqueologia i història antiga Universitat de València.

The project consists of the excavation in situ of the cremation urns and the study and analysis of the remains which they contain, particularly the burned human bones. With a large number of undisturbed urns, the necropolis of Via Ostiense is a privileged place for the study of the rites of death and the interpretation of the gestures and customs of the Roman civilization. In particular, the extraordinary state of preservation of the cremations, all intact, in situ, inside the containers represents a unique opportunity, for the bio-anthropological and archaeological study applying a method that allows an optimum analysis of the human remains, of the conditions of life and customs and funeral rituals.
